Expressing Winter Thoughts 2014

The past weeks have brought many snow falls to our area and a friend of mine posted the other day that he loved the silence that comes with snow. I do, as well, and it reminded me that there are positive aspects to the winter season. Among them are the quiet and peace when Mother Earth is wrapped in her white blanket for a time of rest and renewal. And there is the absolute beauty of a snowfall! Not to mention the unique quality of each snowflake! There are winter hikes through the woods and skiing and sledding for those who love them.

So I decided to honor the beauty and picturesque quality of winter by doing a few paintings. I painted "Winter Sunset" to capture the beautiful bronze reflections the sunset was making on the snow. Then, I painted "Tree Spirit" to honor the survival of a very old tree that has been damaged but has survived many winters. And finally, I painted "Winter Magic" to honor the barren beauty of winter. The frozen landscape is made magical by a hint of sun and the falling snow.

I wish you all the peace of winter and look forward to the coming spring,
Mary

Paintbox Days

Mary Cogley, Artist
Looking back over last week; I realized I had not been able to paint due to some extra demands on my time.   So by the weekend, I found myself really hungry for the joy and freedom of creating with color!  It feels almost like a physical hunger for the energy of the water and colors and wonderful paper! In fact, to me.....colors even have a sound!

I was so excited to have free time to play with my watercolors that I did three paintings....one on Saturday and two on Sunday. The first two are just fun depictions of a drummer in a sort of beach setting which reminds me of the awesome cool feeling I get from hand drumming. The other makes me think of absolute joy. This happy primitive looking stick figure reminds me of how I feel at our annual Summer Rhythm Renewal.....four days of joyful drumming, dancing, and affirmation of one another.

The third one is, once again; a sunrise, called Mellow Morning, pulled from my memories of August, 2013, at the Outer Banks, NC. I turn to these memories for happiness, comfort, and peace.

Hopefully I have pulled the people who view my work into my space when I transfer my feelings into a watercolor painting.

Soon these new offerings will be posted in my Etsy shop for you to purchase if you wish.

Until then .....I will be "playing in my paint box".

Wishing you joy!Mary

Day's End

Mary Cogley, Artist
I have a lovely memory of evenings at the Outer Banks, North Carolina during our visit in summer, 2013.  It is of a soft warmth, after the intense heat of the day has subsided and the setting sun bathes the sky, and the sand, in a warm glow.

Things are peaceful and quiet now, and the beach-goers have taken their leave.  Only a few hearty souls are trying their skill at surfing and the gulls are sweeping the sky or parading along the sand.

It is a wonderful time to relax or meditate and be comforted in the gradually dimming light of day, as the sky turns from pink and gold to dusk.

Soon, I'll list a new painting inspired by this, called  "Day's End."

Wishing you Peace,
MARY
